Camps need campers involved in churches for future

A conversation Deeg Nelson, managing director at Pilgrim Firs, started with campers on environment turned into a lesson on who owns and is responsible for the camp.

Singing and worship are integral to camp life.

Given that only a third of those who come to Pilgrim Firs for the Pacific Northwest UCC Conference camps attend UCC churches, he found the question relevant.

“The churches own the camps,” Deeg told them.

“How do the camps keep going?” a camper asked.

Deeg said that it’s important for campers and those committed to the camping program to be involved in their local churches, who are the owners.

“If the churches struggle, the camps will struggle,” he said.  “If the churches are strong, the camps will be strong.”
